The Hanging Tree is inspired by a tree from Springtown, TX that was used regularly against criminals after they were sentenced and tried during the early to late 1800’s. The tree itself still stands to this day. The piece focuses on sound effects made from the possessed and deadly tree. The slapstick, ratchet, and xylophone in the percussion provide the “wood” sounds and the hanging ropes snapping. The Hanging Tree is aggressively active in both rhythmic and harmonic textures throughout the orchestra. The aleatoric sections are meant to
signify the limbs and leaves of the tree blowing against the wind.
