About the ComposerA Texas native with a master's degree in Music Composition from Southern Methodist University, Jesus Martinez has served as Composer-in-Residence for both the Alabama Orchestra Association and the Irving Symphony Orchestra and premiered Harmonic Tremor for orchestra in 2014. He has scored award-winning films, and the Texas State Legislature issued a resolution in his name to honor his world premiere of Threnody for 9/11 for Mixed Chamber Ensemble.
In March 2016, Jesus was selected as a winning composer for the 3rd Annual Alabama Symphony Orchestra New Music Readings. In 2017, Jesus won the AOA All State Composition Competition and premiered The Hanging Tree, in 2018. Jesus’s film score for All the Wrong Friends, was nominated for best film score at the 2017 Eye Catcher International Film Festival. In November 2018, Jesus’s, One Minute to Midnight, for percussion ensemble was commissioned and premiered for the Sharyland Pioneer High School winners of the International Percussion Ensemble Competition for the Percussive Arts Society Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Martinez previously composed "The Sixth Floor," which premiered at the 30th anniversary of The Sixth Floor Museum on February 18, 2019. In June 2019, Jesus was selected as one of twelve composers to attend Albany Symphony’s “Orchestrating for the 21st Century” Workshop with Christopher Theofanidis and Conductor, David Alan Miller. Members of the Albany Symphony read and performed Jesus’s new work, The Heart of the Question at the American Music Festival’s, First Draughts Reading Session held annually in June. In November 2019, Martinez was commissioned by The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to compose a film score for the 16-minute film compilation of familiar and seldom seen footage. The score 3 Hours in Dallas, was performed live to the film by the Sam Houston High School Percussion Ensemble on the eve of the 56th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination. In February 2023, The Julius Quartet premiered, The Monarch Migration for a three-night concert event, “TEAR DOWN THESE WALLS” as part of the prestigious AT&T Performing Arts Center’s ELEVATOR PROJECT Season. Martinez was recently commissioned by The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to compose a new work for the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination. Echoes from a Memory was premiered in a two-night event at the museum on November 16th and 18th , 2023. Jesus is a three-time ASCAP Plus Award winner (2021-2024) and is a three-time quarterfinalist for the GRAMMY Music Educator Award presented by The Recording Academy/Grammy Awards. Jesus is a member of TMEA, PAS, CMA, and ASCAP and serves on the PAS Composition Committee. Jesus is the co-founder and Executive Director of Emerge Coalition, Inc. a 501(c)(3) nonprofit performing arts organization in Dallas, TX, dedicated to the performance and expansion of contemporary music across the Dallas/Fort Worth Area. |
